What's new in the ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 portal

ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 includes updates, enhancements, and bug fixes. For a list of issues fixed at 11.0, see the 11.0 Issues Addressed List.

Caution:
Before upgrading to ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0, review all retirement notices included in this release:

Each notice includes a recommended alternative to the retired feature or workflow, which may include requirements to recreate existing services, SOEs and SOIs, or apps after upgrading.

Review the deprecation notice to determine whether your hardware and software components are still compatible with version 11.0 and to see a list of functionality that has been deprecated. To review which earlier ArcGIS product versions are compatible with ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0, see Portal compatibility with earlier versions of ArcGIS.

ArcGIS Configurable Apps

All configurable app templates that are in retired or mature status are no longer available at this release. Existing apps created from these templates can also no longer be viewed in ArcGIS Enterprise. For a list of templates that have been retired at this release, see what’s new in ArcGIS Configurable Apps templates. To learn more, review the deprecation notice.

Before upgrading to 11.0, you will need to re-create affected apps using one of the recommended ArcGIS Instant Apps templates. In addition, ArcGIS Configurable Apps templates no longer provide the option to download the app source code.

Presentation for Map Viewer Classic

Presentation for Map Viewer Classic is no longer available in ArcGIS Enterprise at this release. It is recommended that all existing presentations be retired before upgrading to ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0. As an alternative, you may use Exhibit, a new ArcGIS Instant Apps template available with ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0.

To learn more, review the deprecation notice.

Raster basemaps

Several Esri raster basemaps have moved to mature support and will no longer be updated. It is recommended that you use Esri vector basemaps to take advantage of the additional map styles and latest data updates.

To learn more, review the Update Basemap Gallery blog.

Installation and upgrades

  • Enhancements have been made to the Portal for ArcGIS installer starting at 10.9.1 and you can expect faster installation and upgrade performance.
  • If you're upgrading to 11.0 from an earlier version or want to license an app that is new to ArcGIS Enterprise at this release, you must reauthorize your software. You can obtain a new license file from My Esri.
  • Upgrading directly to Portal for ArcGIS 11.0 from versions 10.6.1 or earlier is not supported. To upgrade Portal for ArcGIS 10.6.1 or earlier, first upgrade it to an interim version (10.7.x - 10.9.x) and then upgrade that version to 11.0.
  • The new Map Viewer available at this release was previously available as a beta using a separate installer at 10.8.1 and 10.9. If you installed the beta on a 10.8.1 or 10.9 portal, you do not have to uninstall the beta software before you upgrade to 11.0.

Organization administration

  • Configure advanced portal options through the ArcGIS Portal Directory (Sharing API). In previous versions, these options were configured using a configuration file, which is no longer supported.
  • Restrict member access to only approved external apps for enhanced security in the organization.
  • Configure routing services to get directions and perform analysis in various apps.
  • Specify additional settings for your routing services using a properties file. You can configure settings such as the minimum and maximum number of service instances or the default values for the service parameters.
  • Include images with links on your organization home page.
  • Set up hierarchal categories for organizing members according to characteristics, such as department, location, and expertise. Administrators and members with the correct privileges can filter the list of members by member category. Member categories are also displayed on the member's user settings page.
  • Schedule administrative reports to run automatically. Reports can be scheduled to run daily, weekly, or monthly.
  • Scan your portal for operational health issues using the included Python script.

User experience

Bulgarian is a new language option for viewing the ArcGIS Enterprise portal.

Data management

Mapping and visualization

  • Use Flow smart mapping style in Map Viewer to display vector field data in imagery layers using animated streamlines and wavefronts to represent direction and magnitude.
  • Change the appearance of your map by applying effects to a whole layer or a subset of features in a layer. For example, you can apply a bloom effect to a layer showing volcanic eruptions or apply the Bloom + Transparency effect to an earthquakes layer to draw attention to earthquakes over a certain magnitude.
  • Sketching has been enhanced with support for snapping and other improvements.
  • Add search results to a new or existing sketch layer in Map Viewer. Search results are saved with the map and each location or feature's style and pop-up can be configured in the sketch layer.
  • Save layers as new items in My Content. Use Save as new layer when you want to preserve your layer configurations and reuse them in other maps. Supported layer types are hosted feature layers and ArcGIS Server feature services.
  • Control the display of overlapping features in a layer by setting the feature display order.
  • Configure pop-ups for imagery layers in Map Viewer.
  • Duplicate feature layers in Map Viewer to configure styling, pop-ups, and filtering based on multiple values in the same map without affecting the configuration of the source layer.
  • Add GeoJSON layers from a URL in Map Viewer.
  • Configure floor-aware maps in Map Viewer.
  • Improved support for editing source HTML in pop-ups allows you to seamlessly and securely incorporate preexisting HTML into your pop-ups for custom configuration and display.
  • Add Arcade elements to pop-ups. Using Arcade elements can help reduce duplication in logic when working with multiple attribute expressions and can give you greater control over the data and content in a pop-up.
  • Add and configure OGC WFS, WMTS, and WMS layers in Map Viewer.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are now available to help you complete common workflows. To view the full list of keyboard shortcuts in Map Viewer, press Alt+? on Windows or Option+? on Mac.
  • Map Viewer now supports changing projections in the Basemap gallery.
  • Create charts in Map Viewer to help uncover patterns, trends, and relationships in your data. The supported chart types include bar charts, line charts, histograms, and scatter plots.

3D GIS

  • Use WGS 1984 scene layers with local scenes in Web Mercator to leverage thousands of ArcGIS Online scene layers.
  • Scene Viewer now supports creating local scenes in WGS 1984.
  • Scene Viewer has expanded support of OGC layer types by allowing you to add WFS layers to your scenes.
  • By default, scenes now use WebGL2 to render 3D graphics, which lays the groundwork for future performance and visualization enhancements.
  • Create a scene-based app from the Designer in Scene Viewer. Choose the Instant Apps, Experience Builder, or ArcGIS StoryMaps templates to create apps with custom functionality.
  • Add voxel scene layers, which display multidimensional volumetric 3D or 4D data, to local scenes in Scene Viewer. You can visualize atmospheric or oceanic data, geological underground models, or space-time cubes using voxel scene layers.

Sharing and collaboration

  • Highlight important content in your group by curating a featured content gallery on the Overview tab of the group page. Administrators can also include the curated featured content on the organization's home page.
  • Two new privileges—Reassign content and Receive content—allow organization members to transfer content between them. Organization members can reassign content they own to other members without having to ask an administrator to perform the change.
  • Distributed collaboration now supports the sharing of ArcGIS StoryMaps to collaboration participants in ArcGIS Enterprise-to-ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Enterprise-to-ArcGIS Online collaborations. Recipients of ArcGIS StoryMaps are able to view the stories.
